Jazz Chord Symbol Reference

A comprehensive guide to lead-sheet symbols, their theoretical construction, and essential guide tones (3rd & 7th).

Note: Jazz chord symbols describe the formula for a chord rather than a specific voicing. This page uses Tonal.js to dynamically calculate pitches and ABCJS for notation. Switch between "Full Chord" and "Guide Tones" to see the functional core of each chord.

Pro Tip: The Power of Guide Tones

In jazz theory, the 3rd and the 7th are known as the Guide Tones. These two notes are the most essential for defining the chord's quality (Major, Minor, or Dominant) and its harmonic function. Because they are so defining, you can often play just these two notes and clearly communicate the harmony, even without the root or the 5th.
